Autumn Workouts for Teens - No Equipment Needed!

Crisp autumn days are perfect for staying active! Here are some teen-friendly exercises that use household items and your surroundings - perfect for staying fit between school work, hanging out with friends, or watching your favorite shows.

Morning/Evening Outdoor Workouts

These are perfect for enjoying the beautiful fall weather:

  • Leaf-Jumping Circuit: Get outdoors while leaves are falling:

    • Leaf pile jumps: 10 explosive jumps into (safely raked) piles

    • Park bench step-ups: 5 per side among the autumn colors

    • Trail running intervals: sprint between trees with colorful foliage

    • Capture seasonal photos between exercises (autumn aesthetic for your feed!)

  • Park Workout Challenge: Use the less-crowded autumn parks:

    • Monkey bar traverses: go across while enjoying the crisp air

    • Outdoor fitness stations: Less crowded now that summer tourists are gone

    • Step-ups on wooden exercise platforms with fallen leaves adding challenge

  • Autumn Trail Adventure: For nature lovers:

    • Hiking on leaf-covered paths: extra resistance training!

    • Tree stump/rock jumps: practice agility on natural obstacles

    • Hill sprints with the cooler temperatures: perfect cardio workout

    • Balance beam practice on fallen logs (be safe!)

    • Photography breaks: work those squat muscles while capturing autumn scenes

Indoor Workouts for Rainy Days

When autumn brings stormy weather:

  • School Backpack Fitness: Use your loaded backpack:

    • Backpack squats with seasonal music between sets

    • Walking lunges around your room while wearing backpack

    • Backpack swings (carefully!) for a core burn - hold backpack by straps and swing from side to side with engaged core muscles; great for warming up on chilly mornings

    • Create an autumn-themed playlist to keep motivation high

  • Bedroom Chair Workout: Study breaks made active:

    • Chair hover squats (almost sitting but not quite): perfect during homework breaks

    • Chair tricep dips with leg extensions: warm up your muscles!

    • Track progress in your autumn fitness journal

  • Cozy Blanket Workout: Use your warm blankets:

    • Blanket resistance training: pull against folded blanket for upper body workout

    • Blanket slide core exercise: place feet on blanket on smooth floor and do plank moves

Seasonal Activity-Based Workouts

Embrace autumn traditions as exercise:

  • Harvest Helper Workout: Turn seasonal chores into fitness:

    • Apple picking reaches and stretches

    • Pumpkin carries (nature's kettlebells!)

    • Rake leaves with extra lunges and squats between piles

  • Seasonal Preparation Fitness:

    • Create an indoor obstacle course while storing summer items:

      • Carry storage boxes up and down stairs

      • Squats while organising seasonal clothes

      • Stretching reaches while arranging higher shelves

      • Turn a 30-minute organisation session into both productive cleaning and a full-body workout

    • Window cleaning workout: circular motions are great for arms and core

    • Garden winterising: digging, bending, and lifting as strength training

Staying Healthy in Changing Weather

  • Hydration reminder: Still important even when it's not hot - mark times on your water bottle

  • Layered workout clothes: Start with more layers and remove as you warm up

  • Best times: Midday workouts take advantage of warmer temperatures; indoor morning routines help energise for school

  • Listen to your body: Shorter daylight hours mean planning your outdoor activities carefully
